We are in Narok county at Charles Kuraru's Shamba. We learn about crop rotation which brings about biological tillage for a better yield, introduce him to a new maize variety and advice him on how to choose a proper insurance cover. We also install some solar lights at a nearby school.
In this episode we meet Peter & Virginia in Nakuru to help shape up their shamba. We look at animal care, certified seeds, planting sorghum, rainwater havesting and solar lighting.
We meet Joseph & his family who live in Katumani. Farming in such an arid environment, Joseph's main challenge is water. We learn how drip irrigation not only saves precious water, but has other benefits too, as well as how terraces can conserve the nutrients in the soil. Joseph also learns the best crops to plant in such a dry area, and how crop diversification and better ploughing methods can help improve his yield.
