Welcome to Shamba Shape Up!
This week we are in Kimana in kajiado county to visit a young enthusiastic and hardworking farmer Simon Sankale. He loves farming, but that was not his initial plan.
He was in the seminary but due to financial issues had to drop out. He came back and took over the family farm and is trying to turn it around into a profitable venture. He helped install the borehole pump, is farming maize, sugarcane and other crops. He is struggling and really needs a shape up to turn he place around.
Among the plants on his farm is sugarcane, bananas, kale and beans, he also has 9 sheep, one goat, a cow called Ciru and a calf called Bakita but this is not how he found the shamba when he came back
This week we are learning about:
- Sheep and Goats: focusing on housing, nutrition and deworming.
- Gain an understanding on drip irrigation using Solar energy.
- How to grow chillies profitably and set up a nursery.
- Hygiene and the use of antibiotics and how that affects milk safety and quality.
