Series 15 - Ep 19: Broiler, Poultry Production and Seaweed farming
Welcome to the 15th season of Shamba Shape Up!
This week, Shamba Shape Up travels to the coast for a special edition that spans from poultry farming to the ocean itself!
Meet Rehema Kalama, who runs a successful broiler chicken business in Watamu but is struggling with high chick mortality and a coccidiosis outbreak. With expert help from Kenchic and CKL Africa, we help her shape up her poultry unit by:
- Improving her chicken shed for healthier birds.
- Introducing naked neck broilers, which are perfect for hot coastal climates.
- Teaching her how to manage disease prevention, hygiene, and proper feeding for better growth.
Blue Economy Special: Seaweed Farming
From Watamu, we head south to Shimoni, Kwale County, where we meet farmers literally farming the ocean. With support from World Fish, we explore:
- What seaweed is and how it’s grown in 'ocean shambas.'
- Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA), a smarter and more sustainable way to farm seaweed.
- Value Addition: how cooperatives turn seaweed into products with strong market demand.
From chickens on land to seaweed in the ocean, this episode showcases the incredible diversity of Kenya’s coastal farming."
