Series 15 - Ep 20: Land Aggregation, Black Soldier Fly and Seed Banks
Welcome to the 15th season of Shamba Shape Up!
Food production is facing new challenges as land parcels get smaller, but in Nyando, Kisumu, a group of farmers is turning the tide through teamwork and innovation. We visit a groundbreaking project where 83 farmers have come together to aggregate their land, creating a single, large-scale farm that promises greater profitability and resilience.
In this episode, we dive into the powerful lessons of:
- Land Aggregation (Alliance Bioversity & CIAT): We break down how smallholder farmers can pool their land to achieve the scale needed for commercial farming. The benefits are immense: shared resources, higher yields, and a stronger collective.
- The Black Soldier Fly Project: We explore how farmers are raising these incredible insects as a sustainable and high-protein feed for their chickens. You'll see how organic waste—from fish to brewery by-products and manure—is transformed into valuable feed and rich organic fertilizer.
- Community Seed Banks: Join us as we explore a "borrow and return" system that is preserving indigenous seeds for future generations and building food security. We also get a closer look at traditional, time-tested preservation methods using ash, neem, chili, and secure storage.
This episode reveals the blueprint for the future of farming: a collaborative spirit, modern techniques, and a deep respect for the past all working in harmony to create a more prosperous tomorrow.
