Series 16 - Ep 10: Tiller, Tomatoes and Dairy Parasite Control
Welcome to Shamba Shape Up Series 16!
This week we are in Kimana in Kajiado County and we are visiting farmer Philip Mwaura.
Philip started with dhania farming in 2016 in a quarter plot. He is currently farming on approximately 28 acres and he is now doing approximately 4 acres of dhania. He lives with his family there. The wife has a business in town.
He farms tomatoes on more than 10 acres and capsicum as well, the tomatoes are in different growing and harvesting stages (He plants a new crop of tomatoes every month).
The challenge at times is water shortage. Philip bought his first in-calf cow from a friend in 2024, he now has 7 cows. He milks 3 cows which give him 24 liters daily. One of the cows had a miscarriage last year (possibly due to the hot weather), his first calf is 8 months old and another is 7 months. One of the calves has a swollen stomach.
He has stored feed for the livestock.
We are learning about:
- Effective pest control for your crops
- Smart land preparation that can earn you extra income.
- How to properly deworm your cows to keep them healthy and productive.
