Series 16 - Ep 17: In-Calf & Lactating Dairy feeds, Solar Pump, Mastitis and Broiler

Welcome to Shamba Shape Up Series 16!

This week we are we're in Kiserian, Kajiado County, visiting young farmer Margaret Wendo.

Margret is a young farmer who is taking over the management of the family farm from her parents. She grows a variety of crops, including maize, beans, sweet potatoes, bananas, and other fruits.

She also rears broiler chickens and is bringing a new flock on 30th May. The parents had been farming for quite some time and had installed an electric water pump for irrigation. When Margret took over, she advised them to switch to a solar pump, which would significantly reduce their electricity costs. At the time, they were spending KES 30,000 per month on electricity. They acquired a solar pump on credit and continued paying the same monthly amount for two years. After completing the payments, they now benefit from the solar pump without any ongoing energy costs.

We are learning about:

1. The right feeding practices for in-calf and milking dairy cows to help maximize milk production.

2. The advantages of setting up a solar-powered irrigation system to keep your farm productive even during the dry season.

3. How to properly feed broiler chickens to ensure they are market-ready in just 35 days.

4. How to identify the signs of mastitis in your dairy cows and the best ways to manage and treat it.
