Series 16 - Ep 4: Brush Cutter and Organic Pesticides

Welcome to Shamba Shape Up Series 16!

This week we are in Kiserian in Kajiado county. We are visiting Tania center.

Tania center does mixed farming and they grow so many crops. They practice organic farming and they want to teach the children and the community around, that it’s possible to be food secure while observing food safety.

Tania Centre is a home for orphans’ and children with special needs. Hosts children between the ages of 2-28 years. Has farm managers for the different farm section. Some who have grown up in the centre and trained on how to help out on the farm. The Dairy unit manager for example is Hearing Impaired. They have planted spinach, kales, leeks, carrots, dhania, tomatoes (in the green house). They practice organic farming. Fruit trees (Avocado, oranges, Tree tomatoes, lemons). Biggest challenge on farm is pest infestation on the veggies and fruit trees. They run a bakery for the center but also sell to the public

We are learning about:

  1. Brush Cutter: We now have the proper tool to cut fodder for the cows.
  2. Organic Farming: Ensure the best produce affordable, safe and easy to use products.
