Series 16 - Ep 5: Milk Production and Egg Production
Welcome to Shamba Shape Up Series 16!
This week we are in Kahiga in Murang’a county and we visiting younger farmer and teacher Oscar Kamau.
He is a teacher by profession at a nearby primary school. Grew up farming as a passion and took it up with his father as a business. Started off with cabbages right after form 4 and once he sold his 1st lot.
The money was good enough to take him to campus. He has 2 managers at the farm. One for the chicken (a lady) and the other for the dairy cows (a man). Keeps layers. Has a flock of 1400 (1yr, 1 week old) and 1000 (7 weeks old). He gets 40-41 trays per day.
Currently planted tomatoes which are 1 week old. However, he had planted some tomatoes (Nova F1) on a demo plot, but they were affected by whiteflies and blight He has capsicum, bananas, avocado, courgettes.
We are learning about:
- How you can increase milk production from your dairy cows.
2. Get the best egg production from your layers by feeding them the right feeds at the right stages.
