Series 16 - Ep 7: Shoats Care, Financial Literacy and Organic Pesticides
Welcome to Shamba Shape Up Series 16!
This is week we are in Namanga, Kajiado County and we are visiting farmer Grace Sait.
Grace is a retired nurse. She bought the land and started farming in 2015. Also dug a borehole to help with water situation but the pump is spoilt at the moment. In 2018 her farm was damaged by elephants.
Slowly she got back on her feet and fenced her 6 acres piece of land. She runs a small clinic where she trains women in the Maa community on nutrition especially for kids, expectant mothers and the elderly.
On the farm she has: Citrus fruits trees, pawpaw, sweet bananas, cabbages, spinach, kales, maize, beans and she practices organic farming. Has some rabbits, chicken (improved kienyeji – 36), (pure kienyeji -38) Does compost manure (layering style) that’s turned over weekly. Challenges she’s facing on the farm is mostly on water and proper farm workers. She has 2 cows and a heifer, 11 sheep and 6 goats.
Challenges: feeds and water.
She has planned some more Nappier grass and is waiting for rains so that it can grow.
We are going to learn about:
1. How to protect your sheep and goats from external parasites.
2. Smart ways you can save to keep your farm running as a business.
3. How you can control pest from your cabbage using organic pesticides.
