Series 13 - Ep 9: Beef Calf, Silage, Banana and Financial Literacy

Welcome to Shamba Shape Up.

This week we are near the Tanzanian border in Taita Taveta, by the beautiful lake Challa and we are visiting the young farmer Jorum Gitonga.

Jorum is 25 years old and just got in to farming as a career. After college he worked in industrial area but decided to look at farming, when with the help of his father, he worked out what his earnings would be compared to his job in Nairobi.

Having worked out that he could make more money farming than working in the factories, he took over his father’s farm.

The farm has bananas, cows, goats, maize and grass fodder.

Let’s go and see how we can assist on these issues:

  1. Rearing calves for beef.
  2. How to make silage.
  3. The proper way of planting bananas.
  4. Turning your farm into a profitable business.
