Series 2 - Ep 15: Poultry, Dairy, Banana and Record Keeping

Welcome to Shamba Shape Up Uganda!

This week we are in Buwuzume Village in Wakiso District, 25km from the capital city in Kampala and and we’re visiting Dauphin Mpiira a 50yr old farmer, she is married to Samuel Mpiira and they have 4 daughters. A hard-working farmer and business woman too.

Dauphin Mpiira started farming in 2007 with rearing broilers but switched to layers after 2 years. On her farm she has pigs, goats, layers, a cow, and grows some Matooke.

Dauphin comes from a farming background and loves farming. Over the years she has earned from farming to the point of buying a 3-acre piece of land where she plants maize, Beans but often cultivate in the second rain season. She has also bought another 10 Acres in Nakasongola where she has 40 cows.

Some of her challenges were: -

• The cost of animal feed is so high

• The market for pork is very low

• Her cow’s milk productivity is low
