Series 2 - Ep 18: Poultry, Tomatoes, Orange Fleshed Sweet Potato and Electric Pressure Cooker

Welcome to Shamba Shape Up Uganda!

Today we’re in Mukono and we’re visiting farmer Carol Poni and her five month old baby boy Palmer.

Caro came from a farming family. Her mother is a successful banana farmer.

Caro has a bachelor’s degree in Agriculture and hopes to do a master’s degree soon. Her ambition is to have a model farm where she will be training other farmers on agricultural best practice. And she hopes to create local employment in the process. She currently has 3 full time workers and 2 part time workers.

Her mother gave her 8 acres to farm on. And the very first thing she did was put up a banana plantation on 4 acres. The challenge she has here is she is not able to secure enough mulching materials.

She is also a poultry farmer. She previously had 700 layers. But thieves stole 350 of them. She has also previous reared broilers but was not able to secure a good market in a timely manner.

She also grows tomatoes because it is a high value crop. However, she says that they suffer from tomato blight quite often. We also noticed that she does not stake them.

She is planning to plant sweet potatoes for home consumption. Also, she is yet to make anything off her mango trees as the mangoes tend to rot.

Today we are learning about:

1. Poultry: How to keep and Manage Chicks.

2. Tomatoes: Pest and disease management

3. Orange Fleshed Sweet Potato: We find out about the benefits of orange fleshed sweet potatoes and how to steam them with an electric pressure cooker.

4. Electric Pressure Cooker: A faster, cheaper and easier way of cooking.
