Series 2 - Ep 22: Beans, Broiler, Compost manure and Agro-Forestry
Welcome to Shamba Shape Up Uganda!
Today we’re in Mukono District visiting.
In this final episode of Season Two, our focus turns to four remarkable farmers: Daudi, Joweria, Johnson, and Irene. Each of these farmers brings a unique perspective and tackles different topics within the agricultural realm.
Johnson Kawenyera, a 39-year-old father of two, spent the majority of his adult life working as a volleyball coach. Upon retirement, he turned his attention to farming on the 17-acre family estate. The land is utilized for cultivating various crops such as bananas, coffee, maize, beans, and a few fruit trees. In addition to crop farming, Johnson also raises cows, goats, and poultry.
Being a young farmer, Johnson acknowledges the need to adapt to changing weather patterns and learn the appropriate timing for each enterprise. He holds a particular interest in fruit trees and desires to expand his knowledge on how to effectively plant and nurture them on his farm. Johnson is eager to understand the benefits that fruit trees can bring to his farming operations.
Daudi and his wife Jowelia, are hardworking farmers we visited in Season 1 of 2021,and they were faced various challenges on their farm. The cow shed was poorly maintained, resulting in low milk production. The 7-year-old coffee plantation had untapped potential for higher yields. Nanfuka's banana garden struggled due to weevil infestation and damage caused by heavy rains. Soil testing revealed the need for fertilizer in the coffee plantation. Shamba Shape Up experts provided specific advice: cutting down musizi trees, stumping old coffee trees, removing diseased coffee trees, increasing fertilizer application for coffee. Dr. Sseruwu advised Jowelia to use pesticides, replant bananas with proper spacing and clean planting material. The cows received proper care, and the cowshed was renovated to meet standards.
During our second visit, our focus will be on addressing the demand for fertilizer on Daudi and Joweria's shamba. Both farmers are eager to enhance the growth of their coffee and banana crops, respectively. To tackle this issue, we will demonstrate the process of creating a compost pit. This will provide them with a sustainable and organic solution to enrich their soil and improve the overall health and productivity of their crops.
We are learning about:
1. How to plant beans using smart farming techniques to get the most beans.
2. How to identify, treat, and prevent diseases in Irene's broiler chickens.
3. How to make compost.
4. How to manage fruit trees and integrate fruit trees with the other enterprises and their benefits.
