Series 2 - Ep 9: Agroforestry, Bananas, Coffee and Maize Storage

Welcome to Shamba Shape Up Uganda!

This week we are in Wakiso country, north of the mighty city of Kampala and we’re visiting farmer Jemimah Balisiyoyi.

Jemimah is a retired civil servant. She has been a full-time farmer for more than 20 years now. Her husband is also now retired.

She is a member of two farmer groups. The first, WADIFA [Wakiso district farmers association], focusses on planting agroforestry trees and crops to alleviate climate change. They are funded by an international NGO, Vi Agroforestry. The second group, Nalumuli farmers association, operates like a VSLA group. They meet once a month, contribute 20,000 ugx each and lend to members of the group at an interest.

This week we’re looking at the value of teamwork.

So, let’s go see how teams can work on the farm and profit from one another!

We are learning about:

1. Agroforestry: Intercropping trees with crops.

2. Banana Plantation management

3. Getting rid of pests and diseases in the coffee plantation.

4. How to store maize without losses.
