Series 3 - Ep 12: Export, Farmer Group, RecordKeeping & Value Addition

Welcome to Shamba Shape Up Uganda!

Today we’re in Lukoma village in Wakiso District to meet a real lead farmer and we’re visiting Nyombi Thomas and his wife Nawanuka Scovia. They have 7 children and their farming enterprises cover 5 acres.

On this land Thomas grows 1.5 acres garden eggs, green sugarcane, sweet potatoes, 1 acre of chilli and tomatoes for the local market on half an acre.

Thomas’ story of becoming a successful export farmer started 24 years ago, at the beginning it was tough and he sometimes made loses and had a few setbacks but he didn’t give up. One of these was his investment in hot pepper farming for export, he made many loses due to the pests that attacked his produce and sometime he had to see all his hard work thrown away on a dumping sight but always tried again. Today he is a lead farmer a title created by the ministry of health for farmers with the experience and leadership qualities to inspire and guide other farmers.

We are learning about:

1. The right way to practice post-harvest handling to maintain quality.

2. Positive impact of a lead farmer in a community

3. Learn how solar driers can help in value addition.

4. How to keep better records for your business.
