Series 3 - Ep 13: Post Harvest, Sorghum, Waste Management and Markets
Welcome to Shamba Shape Up Uganda!
Today we are back in history, in this village is where the omukama Kabalenga and Kabaka Mwanga lived from 1894 to 1899. These historical events happened in Agubi village it is in Kangai Sub County Dokolo district.
And today it is we’re visiting Olele Pius and Edubu Daniel the two brothers live on their father’s 2-acre piece of land. On it they grow Maize, soyabean, sim sim, sorghum, potatoes, millet, beans, green grams.
Pius Olele is a 25yr old farmer who lives with his parents and 2 brothers on 2 acres in Agubi village. Being the eldest of 3 Pius pursued academics up to s4 in Luwero district close to the capital city before dropping out. Since them he has worked on the family land in cultivation to earn a living. He still desired to go back to school one day and focus on studying agriculture since he has seen the value of that skill.
Daniel is the second born. He is 23 years old and volunteers as a member of the local VHT. Their youngest brother is a soldier, at 21 years old. The whole family is pretty hands on when it comes to farming activities.
We are learning about:
1. The preferred methods of post-harvest handling of sunflower.
2. Aflasafe and how it protects our sorghum from aflatoxin.
3. What do we do to protect our soils after harvesting?
4. What are some of the standards, we should keep to make sure our produce is fit for the international market.
