Series 3 - Ep 7: Banana, Soil test, Pasture and Record Keeping

Welcome to Shamba Shape Up Uganda!

This week we're here in Rwenjeru Akaku village, Mbarara District, where we meet farmer Joel Kabenga, 29 years old, and his younger brother, Jerimiah Kabenga, 26 years old. Alongside four more of their siblings, they call this 57-acre family estate home.

On this large farm, they grow bananas, tomatoes, watermelons, cabbages, and as well as pastures for their animals. Their livestock includes over 100 cows and 28 goats and sheep. Their farming journey starting in 2019, and they’ve encountered some challenges along the way.

We are going to learn about:

1. Drip Irrigation systems in the bananas plantation and how to use it.

2. How important it is to have a soil test on your farm.

3. How best to improve soils for Horticulture?

4. When to harvest, and good pasture varieties for the region.

5. Record keeping in dairy farming on production and diseases.
