Series 2 - Ep 2: Organic and Inorganic Fertiliser

Welcome to Munda Make Over!

Hello farmers, we’re back! But before we start visiting new farms, we want to go back to the old farmers that we visited, see what happened in their farms and talk more about climate change.

Last week was all about the importance of soil testing so as to know exactly what nutrients are in your soil and their availability to the crops. And choosing the right certified drought resistant seed to help you fight the effects of climate change.

Today we will talk about:

The fertility of your soil:

How can you improve it so that you can get a bumper harvest and a good profit out of your investment.

Remember farmers, every time you plant, the crops use the nutrients in the soil to grow and when you harvest, you take away those nutrients from the soil. With every planting season, more and more of those nutrients are taken away by the harvested crops and they need to be replaced if you want a good harvest. These nutrients can be replaced from organic and inorganic or synthetic fertilizers.

Organic fertilizers are made out of natural materials like manure, plants and animal by-products. They’re readily available and are free or very affordable. The nutrients from organic fertilizers are released very slowly into the soil but last for a long time.

Inorganic or synthetic fertilizers come in. These are made in industries from chemicals. They cost a bit more money compared to the organic fertilisers but their nutrients are released into the soil immediately for the plants to take in.

It’s good to combine both the organic and inorganic fertilizers, to get the best results out of your crop.

It’s important therefore to plan ahead, put aside some money for the start of the new season to buy the fertilizers required, according to your soil test report.
